Visualizing the techniques and potential
of silk screen printing through graphic design
Mission
Kumazawa Screen Printing, Inc. is one of Japan’s leading companies specializing in silk screen printing for over 60 years. As the demand for printed materials continues to decline with the growth of digital technologies such as the internet, social media, and AI, the company approached MORI DESIGN to introduce new silk screen printing techniques and showcase their creative possibilities to a broader audience of designers and artists.
Solution
While Kumazawa Screen Printing had initially envisioned producing a short promotional video about silk screen printing, we proposed a more immersive approach: a tactile book of print samples paired with a documentary video showcasing the craftsmanship and precision behind silkscreen printing. Engaging designers and artists visually and tangibly would foster a deeper appreciation for the technique and expressive potential.
To maximize the reach and impact, we also proposed exhibiting the project at Aoyama MIHONCHO, the renowned showroom of fine paper distributor TAKEO Co., Ltd. The venue was an ideal setting to showcase the project, as it is frequented by designers and creatives. Fully supporting the initiative, TAKEO graciously agreed to provide all the paper to be used in the sample book as well as the exhibition space.
After over six months of close collaboration among the three parties, we completed the sample book. We also produced and displayed seven large B1-sized posters designed to demonstrate the rich textures and depth of silk screen printing on a grand scale. The exhibition came to life with the documentary video featuring the production process of the sample book and displaying the actual printing plates and films used, offering visitors an in-depth look at the silk screen printing process.
The exhibition, designed to spark creative inspiration, attracted a wide range of visitors and received widespread acclaim.
We also created a booklet introducing the basics of silk screen printing to hand out to students and beginners. Printed with fluorescent yellow ink on navy blue paper, the booklet showcased the vibrance of color that is the hallmark of silk screen printing.
The video not only documents the entire printing process, from plate-making to final inspection, but captures the dedication and precision of Kumazawa Screen Printing’s employees in producing such high-quality prints.
