Mission
For over 60 years, Japan’s Kumazawa Screen Printing, Inc. has specialized in the art of silk screen printing. As part of its project to introduce the latest techniques and creative possibilities to designers and artists, the company commissioned the production of a sample book that would fully showcase the charm and potential of silk screen printing.
Solution
In designing the sample book, we first needed to establish a core design concept. While the objective was to demonstrate the broad spectrum of expressions achievable through various printing techniques, we realized that using completely different designs for each sample sheet could distract viewers from focusing on the techniques themselves. After much consideration, we adopted a uniform, simple format and achieved visual expressions that complemented the different techniques and paper types.
The sample book features 39 different sheets, each designed using a variety of printing techniques on a diverse selection of fine papers provided by TAKEO Co., Ltd., a renowned paper distributor that endorsed this project. The techniques employed range from simple single-color printing to fluorescent and textured printing, flocking and thermochromic printing, and more. The book is organized into four sections—BLACK & WHITE, COLOR, TEXTURE, and EFFECT— and is designed to also provide practical know-how, with each sample sheet providing detailed specifications including the paper type, ink colors, and processing techniques in sequential order. At the back, we included an appendix containing information on all the fine papers used in the sample book and explanations of every silk screen printing technique featured. We also attached a separate booklet outlining the design intentions.
Overall, the sample book was designed to serve as a source of inspiration for a wide range of creators looking to expand their creative possibilities.
